Self-Custody for Serious Investors: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hardware wallets, multisig, and inheritance planning — how to hold crypto like your future depends on it, because it does.

Jonas Reiter May 11, 2026

Why self-custody

Every major exchange failure of the past decade — Mt. Gox, QuadrigaCX, FTX — has reinforced the same lesson: not your keys, not your coins. Serious investors treat self-custody as non-negotiable for long-term holdings.

Level 1: single-signature hardware wallet

For amounts under six figures, a reputable hardware wallet is often sufficient. Requirements:

  • Purchased directly from the manufacturer
  • Seed phrase written on metal, not paper
  • Backup stored in a physically separate location
  • PIN and passphrase both enabled

Level 2: multisig

For serious holdings, single-signature is a single point of failure. Multisig (typically 2-of-3 or 3-of-5) distributes risk across hardware devices, custodians, and geographies.

A common setup

  • One device at home
  • One device in a bank safe deposit box
  • One custodial co-signer for recovery

Level 3: inheritance planning

Crypto that no one can access is crypto that is destroyed. Serious inheritance requires:

  • Documented access procedures for a trusted party
  • Legal instruments recognizing digital assets
  • Regular test-recovery drills

What to avoid

  • Storing seeds in cloud storage, even encrypted
  • Photographing seed phrases
  • Using the same passphrase across wallets
  • Ignoring firmware updates from your device vendor

Bottom line

Self-custody is a skill, not a product. Invest the time to learn it properly, and your portfolio outlives every venue it might otherwise sit on.
